The wrestling team closed out the Santa Ynez Tournament with team captain Calvin Kaleel ‘18 placing eighth in the 132 weight class and Daniel Guerrero ‘20 placing sixth in the 170 weight class today.
Kaleel said that going into the tournament, the team’s goal was for everyone to wrestle as hard as they could, which he feels they achieved.
He said that he was thrilled to medal in this two-day tournament, which Guerrero described as one of the most important tournaments that the team goes to.
“The level of competition today was much higher, and it was great to be challenged in that way by some great athletes,” Kaleel said.
Guerrero said that since his technical skill had improved, he was able to get out of difficult situations before his opponents had time to threaten them, which allowed him to medal at the tournament.
“I knew I would be wrestling the best I have to date, and I feel like that really came out in my matches,” Guerrero said. “I also feel that the team’s focus on stamina served as a huge factor over the weekend, as I felt that I outlasted everyone that I was able to beat.”
