On May 4, the Metropolitan Museum of Art placed Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and his wife, Lauren Sánchez Bezos, at the center of its celebration of art and culture. The Met Gala is an annual charity event for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s costume department, traditionally timed to mark the opening of the museum’s spring fashion exhibition and highlight the impact of wearable art, according to Vogue. However, this year the gala’s artistic purpose was undercut by the prominent involvement of Jeff Bezos, who served as “Honorary Co-Chair” alongside his wife Lauren Sánchez Bezos. As Honorary Co-Chairs, they served as public-facing leaders for the event in recognition of their large donations, according to CNN. Their involvement sparked widespread protest in the fashion industry, as many felt the event had been compromised, according to the Hollywood Reporter. Bezos’s involvement is detrimental because his broader influence in fashion and media runs counter to the Met Gala’s values.
The conflicting nature of theBezos’ involvement becomes more damaging when considering the business model he promotes. The Met Gala is an event that highlights the craftsmanship and cultural history of the fashion industry. All the garments worn at the event feature couture craftsmanship, often with laborious processes such as hand-beading and sewing, according to British Vogue. Bezos, on the other hand, represents the opposite end of the fashion spectrum with Amazon. The brand does not value artistic labor or cultural preservation, but instead speed, scale and mass consumption. Amazon’s business model closely resembles that of other fast-fashion brands such as Temu and Shein, relying on the same factories that raise concerns about labor practices and sustainability, according to the Business and Human Rights Center. The company also utilizes sales data to identify trending designs, which are then copied into low-cost, mass-produced versions, often outcompeting the original designer, according to Vogue. Essentially, Amazon is the antithesis of what the Met Gala claims to honor. The event depends on the belief that fashion deserves to be treated as art and is rooted in boundary-breaking originality. By elevating Bezos, the Gala gives cultural prestige to a figure whose company profits from the erosion of the independent artisan.
This is not Bezos’s first attempt to enter the world of arts. He agreed to pay $40 million to license the documentary “Melania” in January 2025, according to Rolling Stone. By giving Bezos a prominent role despite his contributions to the rise of fast fashion and consumerist culture, the Met Gala appears to suggest that its commitment to the arts is secondary to its dependence on billionaire funding. Bezos’s presence reflects poorly on his own values, rendering them contradictory and casting a negative light on the gala itself. His presence shows that an event supposedly dedicated to artistic expression is willing to center someone whose political ties undermine that mission.
Some may argue that Jeff Bezos’ presence at the Met Gala is beneficial because of his donations to the museum. Bezos donated $10 Million to the Gala, according to Page Six. While his donations are undeniably helpful to the Met, there are other billionaires in the past who made large donations but were not named Honorary Co-Chairs. Many billionaires in the past have donated to the museum and simply attended as guests, such as Mark Zuckerberg and Tim Cook, according to Mother Jones. Therefore, there is a route for Bezos to donate to the museum without assuming a leadership role that takes attention away from the art itself.
Ultimately, the involvement of Jeff Bezos in the Met Gala represents a much larger problem than one billionaire attending a fashion event. The Met Gala claims to celebrate fashion as art, but by selecting Bezos as a representative of the event, it allows corporate wealth and political influence to overshadow that artistic mission. His recent ties to right-wing politics and connection to fast-fashion retail make his role feel less like a genuine support of the arts and more like a grab for cultural influence. The Met Gala is supposed to be one of the most visible institutions that defines taste and artistic value, but with his presence, the institution’s credibility is tarnished by what he stands for.
