The girls soccer squad won the Division I CIF SoCal State Regional Championship in a 6-1 win over Pacifica High School on June 5 at Ted Slavin Field. This win wraps up the squad’s 2021 undefeated, 19-0 season. Forward Alyssa Thompson ’23 said that she was really proud of her team for winning regionals this season as it has been the squad’s goal from the beginning.

“It felt amazing to win state,” Thompson said. “It truly reflected how good this team is and how hard we’ve worked and the coaches worked.”

The Thompson sisters were essential to the victory as they scored all of the squad’s six goals. Alyssa Thompson scored four goals and midfielder Giselle Thompson ’24 scored two.

This win comes after the Wolverines defeated Villa Park High School in the CIF-SS Division I Championship 5-0 at Ford Kelly Stadium on May 29. Midfielder Cionnie Pineda ’22 said she attributes the squad’s success this season to the bonds between her teammates.

“I’m just so happy that I got a chance to play with such an amazing group of girls. On and off the field they’re amazing,” Pineda said. “They’re so kind, hard-working and so talented. I look up to each and every single of my teammates.”

Forward Ariana Azarbal ’22 said she believed the squad’s dedication and humility is what ultimately allowed the squad to win state this year.

“We always knew this team had the potential to get here, and we’re so proud that we were able to actually do it,” Azarball said. “We never got overconfident and took it one game at a time.”

Although the squad will lose nine seniors next season, top scorer Alyssa Thompson will continue to be on the team. Pineda said that she believes the squad can achieve the same level of success next year as well due to the talent the team will have.

“I’m super inspired to come back next year and do it again,” Pineda said. “I’m definitely gonna miss playing with the seniors, but next year we’ll try our hardest to win it again for them.”
