Varsity girls volleyball outside hitter Ava Lange ’23 won the Los Angeles Daily News Girls Athlete of the Week award for her contributions to the team Aug. 30.

Lange led the team’s offense with 18 attacks in victories against Bishop Montgomery and Village Christian during the week of Aug. 22, according to the Los Angeles Daily News. The team currently has a record of 20-11.

Lange said the recognition was meaningful to her because of all of her hard work and dedication to her athletic pursuits.

“I was really surprised at first just because it has barely been [the official] season yet, so to already have won something is really nice,” Lange said. “And also, it’s senior year, so I was just pretty proud of myself.”

Lange said she will plan on continuing her volleyball career into college, although she is unsure whether she will pursue the sport as a career.

“I committed to Harvard [University], so after the high school season, I still have my club season to get through,” Lange said. “And then I will go to college and play all three years. I might go overseas after that. I am interested in it, and if the opportunity were to arise, I would take it. But also, it depends on what I’m majoring in [in college] and what I want to do career-wise.”

Lange’s teammate, defensive specialist Kelsey Kim ’24 said Lange has been a key contributor to the success the team has enjoyed in the past two years.

“Ava is just a really well-rounded player,” Kim said. “She is really good at every skill and is really consistent with it. She gets the team a lot of points and a lot of wins. We are in the early stages of our season and we’re still developing as a team right now, but I think we are definitely getting better and are hopefully on our way to a repeat championship.”
