Alyssa Thompson ’23 was called up to the United States Women’s National Team (USWNT) for the upcoming international window on Sept. 29.

Thompson among the USWNT will play friendly matches against England on Oct. 7, and Spain on Oct. 11. Prior to getting called up to the senior team, Thompson has played with the U-20 USWNT since March. Thompson was also the 2020-2021 Gatorade Girls Soccer National Player of the Year. Additionally, Thompson and her sister Gisele Thompson ’24 were the first high school athletes in history to sign a name, image and likeness deal with Nike.

Alyssa Thompson said she was ecstatic about getting called up because it validated all of her hard work.

“I was speechless,” Thompson said. “I was so happy and it made me feel like everything that I have done to get to this moment was worth it.”

Thompson’s teammate Alex Astalos ’23 said she and the rest of the team were thrilled to hear that Thompson got called up.

“I was so proud, but I wasn’t surprised,” Astalos said. “She’s definitely good enough to play there. She deserves all of the attention and recognition she gets. We’re all so supportive, and excited for her.”

Girls Soccer Program Head Richard Simms said Thompson has made a very positive impact on the program as a whole through her attitude and consistent hard work.

“Alyssa really cares about our program and about the players in our program,” Simms said.  “She connects with the other girls. She’s here on a daily basis and when she’s here, she’s very present. She doesn’t separate herself from the group. She’s very much a part of our program in a way that’s really special. She works so hard every day, she comes to lift every day and she doesn’t make excuses.”
