The boys golf team has started their season with a record of 3-1 in match play, with wins against Hart High School, Westlake High School and Campbell Hall High School. In their one loss, they fell a single stroke short of San Marcos High School . The team has consistently posted total scores around 400 strokes.
Branden Wong ’26 said he is excited for the rest of the season after the team’s strong start.
“The season so far has been fun,” Wong said. “We’ve come close in a match against two great teams and the team bonding has been great. We hope to keep lowering the scores as the season continues. The goal is to make the highest division of the playoffs as we can.”
Wong also said he believes offseason team and individual training was a large factor in their strong start to their season, which has been reflected in their team scores.
“Practice was once a week and training was twice a week during the offseason,’’ Wong said. “Coach [Scott Wood] expects us to practice on our own during the week to keep our game sharp. I think that everything we do in practice and lifts does help.”
Will Rosen ’26 said although their season has started off strong, there is more to improve in all aspects as the season continues.
“The team has gotten off to a solid start this year, but we know we have a ton of potential and better scores in our future,’’ Rosen said. “It is especially exciting to see how deep our roster is this year, with many new faces stepping up and playing great golf.”
Rosen said that practice throughout the whole year is reflective of the team’s dedication to winning and overall camaraderie.
“The practice that we’ve been doing since September allows us to be comfortable and relaxed when it comes to match day,’’ Wong said. “We have such a tight- knit team who love playing little competitions against each other, simulating the pressures of tournament shots. I’m looking forward to having a great year with the team and seeing our improvement as a collective as we progress.”
Head Coach Scott Wood ’88 said the team’s commitment to training and leadership from key players has set them up for success, even in a competitive league.
“Our hopes are to compete for a league championship, advance to Division 1 team playoffs, and advance to the CIF team final,” Wood said. “That being said, we are in a very competitive league with Loyola dominating, and teams like Chaminade and Crespi pushing, along with us, to be the next best team. We have trained on simulators once a week since the start of the school year and been in the weight room twice per week as well. We really try to focus on doing everything we can to set ourselves up for success. We have great leadership in Branden Wong and Levi Schwartz as captains, but other leaders as well in [Will Rosen ’26] and [Charlie Sive ’26].
Going forward, it really is about each player prioritizing golf until the season is over. That can be tough, but it has to be done. I imagine they will find a way to do that.”
The team will play the Champions Invitational April 7-8 at Tahquitz Creek Golf Resort.
