The Latinx and Hispanic Student Organization (LAHSO) and the Black Leadership Awareness and Culture Club (BLACC) hosted a soccer game on Ted Slavin field Oct. 3. The game was held to commemorate the end of Hispanic Heritage month and was open to all community members.
LAHSO Co-Leader Joseph Villa ’27 said LAHSO organized the event in collaboration with BLACC to encourage greater participation.
“The idea for this event came from one of our leaders, but we did communicate with BLACC to bring the clubs together,” Villa said. “We did work together among LAHSO to see what exactly we wanted to do, and how we wanted to try to get people to show up with music.”
Co-Leader of BLACC Morgan McGinnis ’27 said she enjoyed the community this event fostered.
“This game gave two affinity groups the chance to meet and build community while also having fun,” McGinnis said. “ The game went well. One of the funniest moments was when my fellow leader and I were struggling to be a goalie.”
South Asian Student Alliance (SASA) Co-Leader Mylo-Vivar Patel ’27 attended the event and said he enjoyed being able to support another affinity group while playing a sport.
“As a fellow affinity group leader, I love going out to my peers’ events, and the fact that it happens to be my sport just makes it that much more fun,” Patel said. “The game was a lot of fun, and some of my other teammates came, which was awesome. I love collabs like this especially when they involve getting together with students to have a lot of great fun.”
Villa said his favorite moment was dancing with other affinity club leaders at the end of the event.
“I hoped to lead an event with people to just show up and have fun,” Villa said. “The purpose was to bring together some of the HW community to celebrate the end of Hispanic Heritage Month with a pretty fun activity. The leaders were playing good music, and we felt the need to dance. I think events like these are definitely the best [when] anyone is allowed to join.”
