Calder Glass ’26 and Max Lee ’27 collaborated under the artist name “i’m so sunsick”to create their album “Can I learn again?” which features alternative, electronic and pop music. The album has not yet been released, but the pair have already dropped singles “RED” on Nov. 6 and “SICK” on Nov. 20.
Lee said the inspiration for the album came from both Los Angeles and his personal music taste.
“We wanted to make something very Los Angeles-centric and fun,” Lee said. “I am very inspired by artist groups like Crystal Castles and NEW YORK, so a lot of the sound is inspired by that sort of electronic dance music.”
Glass said the songwriting process can be taxing, involving a lot of coordination and back-and-forth communication.
“Either [Lee] will make a beat and send it to me, or I’ll make a beat, and then I’ll listen to it a bunch and the words will come to me,” Glass said. “We also get together a lot to help each other get inspiration, bounce around ideas and work on new tracks.”
Lee said that he enjoys making his own music because it allows him to be creative.
“It is pretty fun to make your own works because you have full control over everything,” Lee said. “There is no sort of music theory that goes behind my sound-making process, so all of the sound I make stems from just messing around and finding what works best. A lot of it is just having fun and being creative.”
Lee said he learned valuable production skills and the art of patience from his time working on the album.
“Throughout this process, I’ve learned very technical skills, such as learning how to mix and master my own tracks, but I also have learned the art of patience,” Lee said. “From time to time I’ll have writer’s block and it’ll just prevent me from doing any sort of music-making. I hate when that happens because I always feel enthusiastic to create music. That’s why I feel patience is one of the most valuable skills an artist can have. A lot of my music I want to drop immediately, but I’ve realized that you have to give it time for people to get used to it before you can drop the next single.”
Glass said the most rewarding part of making music is seeing people enjoy the final product.
“I love when people sing the words to the songs,” Glass said. “It feels great to know we had a small impact on each listener’s day. Through our music, I really hope they can feel the fun, exciting vibe we want to share with them.”
