4 singers accepted to Honor Choirs

Elizabeth Edel ’16, Michelle Lee ’14, Marcella Park ’15 and Benny Weisman ’15, were all chosen to participate in the Southern California Region High School Honor Choirs performance Nov. 23 at Santa Monica High School.

The auditions for the Southern California Region High School Choirs took place Sept. 28 and Oct. 5.

During their auditions, each of the students was given a solo piece along with scales to perform for judges from the California American Choral Directors Association.

After completing his or her audition, each applicant was given a score based on his or her performance.

The highest scoring applicants were then selected to be participants in the Honor Choirs.

After being accepted into the Honor Choirs, the selected students were divided into three separate choral groups: the Women’s Choir, the Men’s Choir or the Mixed Choir.

Edel and Park joined the Southern California Region High School Honor Choirs’ Women’s Choir.

Lee and Weisman joined the Southern California High School Honor Choirs’ Mixed Choir.
The Honor Choirs have held rehearsals only once so far, on Oct. 26, to prepare for their approaching performance.

Each of the Honor Choirs is currently in the process of preparing either five or six songs for its upcoming performance.

The Men’s Choir is preparing the songs “Asclendit Desus,” “Lonely Island Baby/We All Fall,” “Send in the Clowns” and “Tshotsholoza” for the performance.

The Women’s Choir will be performing in the same performance that the Men’s Choir will be performing in.

The Men’s Choir is preparing the songs “Hoj, Hura, Hoj,” “Lauliku Lapse Poli,” “Dixt,” “Idumea,” “I Will Be Earth” and “Still I Rise” for its performance.

The Mixed Choir is preparing the songs “Hallelujah!,” “Splendid Jewel,” “OSchöne Nacht,” “It Was a Lover and His Lass,” “My Shepherd Will Supply My Need,” and “Let the River Run” for its performance.

This year is Edel and Park’s first time partcipating in the Honor Choirs.

“I really enjoy Honor Choirs because I get to learn so much about musicality from the conductors. It’s also great for bonding with fellow singers, not just from school but from choir camp as well,” Park said.

However, this year is Lee and Weisman’s third year returning to perform for the Honor Choirs.

After their performance in the Southern California Honor Choirs, all of the performers will be eligible to audition for a position as a chorus member in the California State Honor Choirs.
