Chapus Wins National Mile Race with a Personal Record

    By Michael Aronson

Cami Chapus ’12 won the high school girls’ Adidas Dream Mile race with a time of 4:42.71 setting her own personal record which edged out the second place finisher by .19 of a second in Randall’s Island, New York on June 11.

Chapus, who was the top ranked runner in the race after a State Championship win in the 1600-meter event, ran against 13 of the best high school girl runners in the country in cold and wet conditions due to rain prior to the race.

Chapus started in the third position and stayed in the middle of the pack for most of the race before making a move to the front with 440 meters left. Chapus kept the first position for the rest of the race to win the contest despite a late move from a competitor who nearly overcame her.

“Even though I came into [the race] as a favorite, I felt like an underdog because I was new to this whole experience,” she told ESPN Rise after the race. ”I was really excited and it is great to see my training pay off.”

Chapus continues her competition on the east coast later this week at the New Balance Outdoor Nationals in Greensboro, North Carolina.
