Some matches canceled, some delayed as mercury hovers above 100

Due to the extreme heat, the girls’ golf match against Notre Dame at Hansen Dam Golf Course was canceled Sept. 16, and the girls’ field hockey home game against Fountain Valley High School was moved from 3:15 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. in hopes of cooler weather, according to the Athletic Department website.

The weather bureau reported the temperature in Studio City at 101°F at 5 p.m.

“It kind of sucks that we have to stay so late, but I am really glad we won’t have to play in 100°F weather,” field hockey player Riya Garg ’15 said.

Misting fans were set up to cool both team benches, and canopies were placed over the benches for shade.

Public schools in Los Angeles canceled all outdoor athletic events Monday and Tuesday because of the triple digit heat in the San Fernando Valley on Monday.

Harvard-Westlake canceled  boys’ and girls’ basketball practices as well as the girls’ tennis practice, players said.

However, the football team still practiced along with the girls’ volleyball team, and cross country team.

The boys’ varsity water polo game is scheduled to be played at 5:30 p.m. against Dana Hills.
